Canadian PM Mark Carney said that Canada's relationship with America is over. Is this what Canadians feel about the average American, that their relationship with us is over?

An American friend of many years emailed me when Trump first announced that he intended to annex Canada one way or another. He asked me what I thought about the idea.

I replied that I was appalled, pissed and was finding it hard to understand why anybody (including Americans) would even contemplate such an idea… especially in reference to their closest ally and strategic partner.

His response was along the lines of “Oh, your just misinterpreting his words…”

My reply was “Well, I guess we are done. Really done.”

That was our last conversation. A friendly relationship gone in a second.

There are too many Americans who actually support the MAGA agenda for Canada to ever completely trust the USA now and in the future.

I think Mark Carney has eloquently stated how the vast majority of Canadians feel. It will take time but we have already started to dismantle our traditional role of yes-man sidekick to the US.

We will be seeking to realign ourselves with other like-thinking nations in the areas of trade and security.

The US will always be a trade partner with Canada due to the nature of what each has to offer but the volume of trade in both directions is likely to slide. After the current Trump crap is over common sense may return but that means that Canada must start treating the USA as a dangerous neighbour that cannot be trusted. They are totally unreliable.
