Pro-gun lawyer shot with own weapon by MRI scanner dies

A pro-gun lawyer was shot by his own weapon while visiting a hospital when a powerful magnetic field from an MRI scanner set the pistol off.

( JB: I had to laugh at this point...)

Leandro Mathias de Novaes was taking his mother for a scan at the Laboratorio Cura in Sao Paulo in January and entered the facility with a concealed handgun.

Despite warnings from staff to remove jewellery and metal objects in the MRI room, Mr Mathias kept his weapon on his waistband.

The magnetic field from the machine was so strong that the weapon was pulled from his waist and fired off a round, which hit him in his stomach.

The 40-year-old Brazilian was treated in hospital for more than two weeks before he died from his wounds.

The lawyer was known for posting pro-gun content to his 12,000 followers on TikTok.

A spokesman for the Order of Attorneys of Brazil in Cotia, São Paulo, said: “It is with deep regret that OAB Cotia communicates to all fellow lawyers the unexpected loss of our dear friend and lawyer Dr Leandro Mathias de Novaes.

“We are sorry for the loss and we sympathise with his family in this moment of pain.”

“We would like to emphasise that all accident prevention protocols were followed by the Cura team, as is customary in all units.

“Both the patient and his companion were properly instructed regarding the procedures for accessing the examination room and warned about the removal of any and all metallic objects.”

The facility’s spokesman added that both Mr Mathias and his mother had signed a form regarding the protocols, but that the lawyer failed to mention his weapon and entered the unit with it “by his own decision”.

Police confirmed that the weapon was properly registered with a valid gun licence.

This incident is not the first freak accident involving an MRI scanner.

In 2018 a 32-year-old man from India died at a hospital after being pulled into an MRI chamber while he was holding an oxygen tank.

Rajesh Maruti Maru had been with his sister’s elderly mother-in-law at Mumbai’s BYL Nair Municipal Hospital.

The family accused hospital staff of carelessness.

JB COMMENTS: When I read this, just the title made me laugh as here was a man - stupidly carrying a gun - legal or not I really do not care - as anyone who is PRO GUN in this modern day and age needs their heads examining as we all know how dangerous they are and here we have a man killed by his own gun and - sorry - it accidentally went off because he did not pay attention to the warnings and even signed a paper to say so - and then he decided arrogantly to carry the gun anyway and not tell anyone and I have absolutely no sympathy at all. ZERO.

He was not in the street he was in a hospital room with his Mommy - and this little boy felt a man by having a gun in his pocket. I despair for how so many people are just so dumb dumb dumb and THANK GOD he was the one shot and not some innocent nurse or doctor at work - it may have been a tragic accident, but it was NOT an accident as he could / should have been able to play safe and HAND THE GUN OVER WHILE GOING INTO THE ROOM - as he was advised and as he claimed he had done.

I feel sorry for his Mother having to witness her little boy murder himself through his selfish, careless and foolish little boy behaviour with a gun. He simply couldn't let it go.

I despair.

Dear HH. So this man was advised and he signed a paper to say he had handed over all his metal things and forgot all about a fully loaded gun in his waistband. Is this some kind of joke. I actually laughed as I thought it was fake news but when it came clear it was serious, I still laughed at the stupidity of the man who paid the ultimate price with his own life. What a fool. Vic.
