Why do Europeans seem to have forgotten that the United States of America is the leader of the free world?

You know how when a teenager walks into a room and starts telling you things? I remember my daughter walking into my house in the early 2000’s and proclaiming she had discovered this great new band called Aerosmith.

She was 14 at the time and we nobly did not take the piss out of her but congratulated her on her choice of music and listened to this CD she had brought home just for us to hear. It was a few months later, while going through my CD’s looking for something else that she found a little collection of Aerosmith CD’s that I had for years.

At this point she realised that just because she thought they were a new band it did not mean they were but we were too kind to point out the blindingly obvious as it is always better to let a teenager find these things out for themselves (they get kinda grumpy if you try telling them a damn thing).

Which brings us to the way Americans have been saying for years that they are the “leader of the free world”. Self proclaimed leaders of the free world does not mean they are leaders of the free world, it just means they think they are.

Europeans have been patting those cute lil Americans on the head for a few years now and letting them ramble on about how great their country is and how much better it is than everybody else’s while we all knew it wasn’t. We could all see the appalling health care, the obsession with guns, the blatant racism and misogyny. We could see how your education system is failing as more and more of you went anti vac or became flat earthers.

We could see how ridiculous your political system was where you have to be able to PAY to become President and millions of dollars are thrust into political campaigns before this thing you call the “Electoral college” just decides who should be given the top job.

We all watched you as you decided you knew everything and the rest of the world knew nothing.

And, like all teenagers, the illusion has now fallen and us older and more experienced leaders of the free world are watching America implode as the illusion fails.

Much like my daughter when she realised Steven Tyler is older than her parents, it is time for lil ol’ USA to realise it is, and has never been, considered the “leader of the free world”. We were just too polite to tell you as we wanted you to realise it for yourselves.
